WHAT SIZE SERVER RACK? 

Height, width and depth

Check the location where you will place your server rack. Is there adequate room to access the rear and sides of the cabinet if needed?

Ensure there adequate breathing space around the cabinet. Remember the equipment stored inside the data cabinet can generate some heat.

When loaded with equipment, cabinets have substantial weight!

Check the type of floor that the data cabinet will be placed on. Concrete is best, but consider the weight of a loaded cabinet at full size (42RU).

If you are wall mounting your data cabinet, ensure you have wall studs where you can attach your wall brackets.

Do you have power near the server rack location?

Most items in the data cabinet will require power. Cabinets can be fitted with power rail or standard power boards. Ensure there is a power point (at least 1 x outlet) near the cabinet location.

HOW MUCH GEAR DO YOU HAVE?

Will the cabinet satisfy future equipment updates?

Keep in mind that rack mount equipment needs a deeper sized cabinet (800mm). If you initially purchase a cabinet with a smaller depth, it will not suit rack mount servers.

Consider future pieces of equipment you may opt to add to your network - switches, routers, additional servers.

what extra's do you need?

Accessories are available for all server racks.  Sometimes its not until you're building your rack that you find you need something extra. Shelving, extra cage nuts, data sockets, ethernet cables, cable minders, and wall plates.  As us about any spare parts you need.

what does RU mean?

The term rack unit, RU or U is an EIA standard unit used to describe the height of any equipment that can be mounted in a 19 or 23 inch rack.

One RU is 44.45mm high / 1.75 inches or 3 bolt holes.

The size of rack equipment is described by a U number.

One rack unit would be 1RU or simply 1U. For example, a 6RU data cabinet would provide 266.70mm (10.5 inches) of space or room for 6 X 1U sized pieces of rack equipment.
